Mary King, The Autobiography
Mary King/ Kate Green
By her own admission, Mary finds it extraordinary that she became interested in horses as her parents were anything but keen. Her father, having had to retire from the navy due to a motorbike accident, became a verger, so money was very tight. Her first pony, when she was six, was the ancient 'cast off' from the local vicar's children. A visit to Badminton Horse Trials inspired her to pursue a career in eventing. In the early days she had to support herself and worked tirelessly on a series of jobs: a butcher's delivery round and as a gardener, cook, and chalet girl; anything to make money and help towards fulfilling her dream.
